COLLABORATIVE FILM WITH FILM MAKER LINDA CURTIN AND GASP ARTISTS FEATURED IN RECENT FESTIVAL IN BRIGHTON

The Magic of Cinema is a participatory documentary between filmmaker Linda Curtin and a number of artists with intellectual disabilities who work in a supported studio setting. As artists, their work seeks to break barriers in society and in the world of art that may exclude or limit the participation of artists who may need additional supports.
The project itself is a participatory documentary that aims to explore the medium of cinema. Each participant is invited to respond through their own art form, from painting to sculpture and performance. The result is a six minute meditation on cinema.

The film has been getting recognition recently nominated  as one of the top films of the Oksa Bright festival in Brighton.

GASP ARTISTS EXPLORATION AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AT NANO NAGLES

The GASP artists supported by Karolina Poplawski made a number of visits to Nano Nagles from the Crawford Supported Studio. They responded to the history, architecture, environment and life of Nano Nagle. 

Rosaleen's work colourfully recalled her days spent in school as a child at the school at Nano Nagles. 

At the exhibition of the resulting work, the public could respond, experiment and meet artist Yvonne Condon for a quick portrait.

The GASP artists will be based in the Crawford Art Gallery each Tuesday throughout 2018, and on Thursdays in the CIT Crawford College - Arts in Health and Education Department, with artist-facilitators Mairead O’Callaghan and Karolina Poplawska. We are proud to have the opportunity to work in partnership with the GASP artists as they continue to gain a strong reputation for their work with an extensive exhibition record, as well as, our partners Cope Foundation, Arts in Health & Education CIT Crawford College of Art & Design.

What is a Supported Studio?
A supported studio is a sustained creative environment for individuals with specific health or social needs. Supported Studios provide technical artistic support, networks and audiences outside the health and social care settings.

About some of GASP artists who attend the studio:

Katie Whelan- Katie's warm personality speaks through her art, where as she says 'it's all about love’. Her sketches tell stories from her life. Through her painting process a feast of colors and shapes are constantly evolving. Many of her paintings can be found home in cafes and private collections around Cork City.

Rosaleen Moore- In private life Rosaleen loves to play golf and to crochet, in her art work she is a traveller. She paints places that she knows from her memories, places that she passes every day and those that she imagines visiting in the future. Under her brush, streets lose real perspective but gain a new free-wheeling quality that hold all sorts of new adventures.

Tom O'Sullivan- Tom works mainly in acrylic paint technique. His art presents combinations of natural scenery with imaginary landscapes. His paintings speak through a expressive mixture of colours. Tom exhibited successfully in places like Wandesford Quay Gallery, Sirius Art Centre, The Vision Centre and Public Museum, Cork. 

Íde Ni Shúilleabháin- Íde depicts objects and people using geometric shapes, her strong and confident style re-imagines the familiar. Her favorite techniques are watercolours pencils and coffee drawings. Íde is dedicated and incredibly focused.

Yvonne Condon- Yvonne is a dynamic artist from East Cork. Using vibrant colours and confident lines in just few minutes Yvonne captures the essence of portrayed person or object.  Derek Foot filmed several hundred of Yvonne's paintings displayed in Cork City Hall Auditorium in 2016 - it was just a small part of Yvonne yearly output.

GASP Artists Íde, Rosaleen and Tom have been using the space in the workbench at the Bank of Ireland on Patricks Street to research and work for an upcoming exhibition in April.

Workbench is a unique concept which connects entrepreneurs, Branch, and community by offering free dedicated space for co-working, seminars, clinics, and events to encourage innovation and new ideas.

The Magic of Cinema is a participatory film project between GASP artists and visual artist Linda Curtin. You can watch a teaser of the movie during culture night.

GASP artists at Costigans

For the month of August, Gasp artists creating art work in the Grannie Room of Costigans pub every Wednesday from 10:30 - 13:30.

GASP @ Quay Coop

For the last two weeks of June, GASP artists are using the 2nd floor of the Quay Coop Restaurant as their studio space. It's the start of a project 'On Quay Coop' and at the end of the year you can see the exhibition of work inspired by the building, staff, guests and food .
